Stacey Abrams, the Democrat who is running for governor in Georgia, is taking a massive amount of heat for remaining maskless while she was in a room full of masked children. Abram’s campaign is nowhere near making an apology. Instead, they are calling the criticism a “false political attack.”
Unfortunately for Abrams, a picture of the encounter became viral this past weekend. Abrams chose not to wear the mask while she was visiting Glennwood Elementary School so that she could launch their yearly African American read-in. The picture that went viral was Abrams sitting on the floor with her legs crossed and smiling without a mask. Dozens of children and adults behind her were all wearing masks. Abrams tweeted about the picture and said that her visit was “spectacular, delightful, and outstanding.”
Abrams campaign responded to the public thrashing by saying, “It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack, and it is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records when it comes to protecting public health during the pandemic.”
They apparently didn’t think that they defended their candidate enough with that statement so they put out a later statement saying that the attack was pathetic, transparent, and silly.” They believe that it is “beneath anyone” who says that they want to lead in Georgia.
They are referencing how Brian Kemp, the Georgia Republican governor, reacted to Abram’s inconsistency. He said that she wants to have government mandates in Georgia for adults and children, but it doesn’t apply when she needs a photo-op.
This sentiment was echoed by David Perdue, who is leading the state’s Republican primary for governor. He just flat out said that what Abrams did was hypocritical. Perdue also said, “Liberals’ thirst for power during this pandemic has caused enormous damage to our kids, while the elite like Stacey continues living their lives.”
Betsy DeVos, the former Education Secretary, had an interesting perspective. She said that the issue was not that Abram’s decided not to wear a mask, it was that she wants to deny those kids and their families the chance to make the same decision.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the United States Senate candidate running in Pennsylvania, said that the viral picture is evidence of what is wrong with the far left and he focused on Abram’s mandates that harm children.
Abrams is not alone. There are other Democrats who have recently acted out in hypocrisy. For instance, California’s Governor Newsom saw a big backlash when he posed without a mask for a photo during the Rams-49ers NFL game. He was failing to follow a local mandate as well as LA stadium’s requirements.
San Francisco’s Mayor Breed and Los Angeles’s Mayor Eric Garcetti posed without masks with Magic Johnson at the same game. Get this…Garcetti claimed that he held his breath while the picture was being taken so it kept him from contracting COVID-19.
Politico White House reporter Alex Thompson wrote in a tweet on Sunday that he predicts the Abrams photo will be in many Republican ads this year ahead of the midterms.
Fox News asked Abrams if she has any regret over not wearing a mask, and she simply said, ”We will let our statement speak for itself.”
So the number of politicians who just keep speaking out of the left side of their mouths is growing, and they just don’t seem to see the hypocrisy of it all. Should be an interesting mid-term election!
