Before July 4th rolled around, it seemed obvious that Dr. Fauci and the like were going to start to make certain recommendations again. Of course, they wanted to let everyone enjoy their festivities first. They were at least smart enough to know that they could not ask Americans to cover back up at their cookouts this summer.
Now, all of that is about to change and we are here to say that we told you so. Unfortunately, the B.1.617 Delta variant has caused a spike in the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. We already knew that the liberal states would waste no time issuing mask mandates all over again. It did not take long before California decided that they were going to rise to the occasion.
The era of precautions is back upon us. On June 29, residents of LA County were told that it was in their best interests to start masking up again. Residents were advised to start wearing masks again, even if they had already received both jabs. They stopped short of a full recommendation, though.
It was meant as a preventive measure. If they could get people to wear their masks, perhaps we could have avoided some more serious issues later on. That plan did not work and now, LA County residents are not being asked to wear their masks. They are being told that it is time to do so. That’s right, you guessed it, the mask mandates are back in full effect.
What was once a strong recommendation is now a full-on order again. The LA Times has more:
“The new order, which comes a little more than two weeks after the county recommended the same protocols as a precaution, will go into effect at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, according to the county’s health officer, Dr. Muntu Davis.
Some exceptions will apply, Davis said, but the order will be similar to the requirements that were in place prior to California’s June 15 reopening…
L.A. County has seen a steep increase in coronavirus cases of late. During the weeklong period that ended Wednesday, the county reported an average of 1,077 new cases each day — a 261% hike from two weeks prior, according to data compiled by The Times.
On Thursday, Davis reported 1,537 additional cases.”
Is this even a sizable number of cases for this population? It does not seem to be the case. 1,500 cases in a county of 10 million people would not seem to be cause for alarm but this is a liberal state and Newsom needs to make sure that he is keeping people afraid.
To be fair to California, it is obvious that they are trying to get out in front of a surge before it is too late. Cases are not too high but now that hospitalization is starting to become a factor again, it is easy to see why California is worried about another uptick that causes bed shortages once again.
Right now, things are in the problematic stage but California has yet to reach crisis mode. The current infection rate is cause for alarm, though. At 1.42, things can become ugly quickly if things are not taken care of. Mask mandates are all well and good except for one thing. We already have evidence that they do not work.
The experts are saying that the only surefire way to protect oneself from the Delta variant is by getting vaccinated. If anything, LA County should be using the variant as the impetus to get people to receive their jabs. 60% of eligible adults have already received theirs, which compares favorably with the national averages.
Maybe a few holdouts would be sparked into action with the latest news but we doubt it. The only thing that can really be done here is to ask the vaccinated to mask up to benefit others. That way, no asymptomatic carriers are able to cause a more widespread infection. The real risk now? School closures come fall.
