Longtime actress and comedian Bette Midler used her first language to criticize the way first lady Melania Trump speaks one of her five languages. The actress lashed out on Twitter, referencing Trump’s Republican National Convention address.
“Oh, God. She still can’t speak English,” Midler said in a less than flattering tweet. That wasn’t her only comment, however. She also took aim at Trump’s initiative for children when she said, “#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!”
Trump was lauded by conservatives for her address in which she encouraged voters to put her husband in office for a second term.
“I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless. I want you to know you are not alone,” Trump said. “It has been inspiring to see what the people of our great nation will do for one another, especially when we are at our most fragile.”
Trump avoided taking swipes at her husband’s opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden.
“I don’t want to use this precious time attacking the other side because as we saw last week, that kind of talk only serves to divide the country further,” the first lady said, seeming to criticize the Democratic convention itself, which was weighted down with barb after barb at the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus. “I’m here because we need my husband to be our president and commander in chief for four more years. He is what is best for our country.”
Midler, however, didn’t hold back her comments on Trump, tweeting again that “You are one lucky Slovenian!” in response to Trump’s assertion of the same kind that she felt fortunate.
“And after all that surgery, you hit a kind of horrible jackpot, chained to [a] colossal idiot.”
Trump addressed her husband’s unconventional way of approaching politics saying that President Donald Trump makes no secrets about how he feels about things” and described him as “an authentic person who loves this country and its people and wants to make it better.”
“Donald wants to keep your family safe. He wants to help your family succeed. He wants nothing more than for this country to prosper and he doesn’t waste time playing politics,” Melania added.
The first lady is standing up for not just her husband’s administration, but the ethos of what he has said from the time he was a candidate, that he planned to do, which is upset the balance of politicians in Washington.
From the time he was taking on his Republican challengers in 2015 and early 2016, the Washington outsider made it clear that he didn’t believe in career politicians. While he’s similar in age to Biden and his former opponent Hillary Clinton, unlike the two of them, he has spent the vast majority of his life working for a paycheck that didn’t come through tax dollars.
Trump is a firm believer in some basic economic principles, such as subsidizing what you wish to encourage (such as small businesses, parents for their children, etc) and taxing what you wish to discourage (like manufacturing outside of the United States).
In the case of politicians, if Donald Trump has his way, their taxation will come in the penalty of job loss if term limits can be enacted, and a search for a new home for recently minted Democratic voters, also known as illegal aliens. None of that appears to be sitting well with the left.
